We could probably stand to be a bit more unhinged
Used casually to describe behavior, reactions, or events that are wild, chaotic, unfiltered, or wildly disproportionate to the situation.
Lately I've been trying to be more "actively" unhinged. We aren't talking about psychotic rants to strangers on the bus here; more so just trying to skip the internal filter that tells me when things might be "too much" or "unlike me" or "out of left field" from time to time.
Today I was asked to be on a panel of professionals to answer questions from soon-to-be graduates of my college's computer science program. Most of the answers given from the other people on the panel were good, but very much in line with what you'd expect if you scanned LinkedIn for some generic career advice. My goal was to give honest feedback for thigs I regretted and wished I'd done differently, which a few times flew in the face of some of the other more "professional" answers.
At one point we were asked to "imagine what one piece of advice you'd give to a younger sibling if they were about to graduate from this program". The others answers were all good, professional things, which probably would have a meaningful, measurable impact on entry-level job success if you could measure it. My advice, though, was to "Go and love your life. Take a year off and do something awesome if you want to and are able: bike across the country, tour around Europe, move to a new city... whatever you've always wanted to do, just go for it; you'll have the rest of your life to work, and one year is not much time in the grand scheme of things". Reading this back, it still sounds like fine advice in my opinion. In the moment though, it felt like the unhinged answer, because I was certainly not following the theme set out before me.
Maybe my answer meant something to someone, or maybe it didn't - I will probably never know. But, it sure felt good to cast off the filter for a few minutes and inject what felt like a bit of chaos into an otherwise-stuffy situation.
